Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Association Projects
Bungalow Heaven is a neighborhood on the move! The imagination,
perseverance and hard work of many fine people have contributed immeasurably
to the neighborhood's national reputation as a community committed to preserving
and promoting its architectural legacy and making life safer and more enjoyable
for its inhabitants. The Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Association continues
to be involved in many projects involving McDonald Park and neighborhood
improvement programs as well as sponsoring many events in the Park. Here
is a list of just a few things made possible with your generous support:
- McDonald Park Shade Structures: Two beautifully-crafted shade
structures designed by architect and BHNA board member Russ Hobbs were
completed last year. These spacious structures reflect our Arts &
Crafts architecture by featuring river rock pillars and exposed beams
and are landscaped to compliment the structure's design. This ambitious
project will be enjoyed for generations to come and was jointly funded
by the BHNA and the City of Pasadena.
- Bungalow Heaven Resurvey Project: A groundbreaking program designed
to protect our architectural heritage, the resurvey project provides street
elevation photographs and important architectural information on each architecturally
significant home in Bungalow Heaven. The information is available on CD-ROM
for use by the city to better service those who undertake future home remodeling.
The resurvey project is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.
Neighborhood volunteers spent hundreds of hours collecting information
for the program, which was funded by the BHNA.
- Bungalow Heaven Photo Project: BHNA purchased from the City
of Pasadena treasured historical photographs of homes built in what is
now known as Bungalow Heaven.
- New Neighbor Welcome Package: A comprehensive and informative
package was created for new neighbors containing information on Bungalow
Heaven and, when possible, historical and architectural details on their
specific house.
- Catalina Public Library Project: BHNA and the local public library
have created a special section in our local branch dedicated to historic
preservation, the history of Bungalow Heaven, and Arts & Crafts
architecture and design.
- Longfellow School Sign: BHNA donated funds to the local public
school to assist them in the construction of their new sign on Washington
Blvd. BHNA architect Russ Hobbs also donated his time in creating a base
design to compliment the historically significant school building.
- North Lake Specific Plan: BHNA continues to play a leading role
in the future growth and direction of the neighborhood's commercial district
- North Lake Avenue.
- Neighborhood Events in the Park: "Sundays in the Park"
held each summer celebrates the neighborly spirit of Bungalow Heaven, bringing
hundreds of neighbors together for great food and entertainment. These
are followed each year by the BHNA Halloween Party - a barbecue in the
park with rightful entertainment for the kids.
- Access to Referral Resources: BHNA is a member of Pasadena Heritage,
therefore, all members may access the resource referral list they maintain
to find contractors experienced in working on older homes.
- Newsletters: Our quarterly BHNA newsletter printing costs are
paid for by our neighborhood association.
